Quasiparticle excitations in relativistic quantum field theory

چکیده
We analyze the particle-like excitations arising in relativistic field theories in states different than the vacuum. The basic properties characterizing the quasiparticle propagation are studied using two different complementary methods. First we introduce a frequency-based approach, wherein the quasiparticle properties are deduced from the spectral analysis of the twopoint propagators. Second, we put forward a real-time approach, wherein the quantum state corresponding to the quasiparticle excitation is explicitly constructed, and the time-evolution is followed. Both methods lead to the same result: the energy and decay rate of the quasiparticles are determined by the real and imaginary parts of the retarded self-energy respectively. Both approaches are compared, on the one hand, with the standard field-theoretic analysis of particles in the vacuum and, on the other hand, with the meanfield-based techniques in general backgrounds. ar X iv :0 80 1. 43 24 v2 [ he pph ] 5 D ec 2 00 8

Topological effects and particle physics analogies beyond the massless Dirac-Weyl fermion in graphene nanorings
Armchair and zigzag edge terminations in planar hexagonal and trigonal graphene nanorings are shown to underlie one-dimensional topological states associated with distinctive energy gaps and patterns (e.g., linear dispersion of the energy of an hexagonal ring with an armchair termination versus parabolic dispersion for a zigzag terminated one) in the bands of the tight-binding spectra as a func...
متن کاملCollective excitations at the boundary of a four-dimensional quantum Hall droplet
In this work we investigate collective excitations at the boundary of a recently constructed four-dimensional ~4D! quantum Hall state. Local bosonic operators for creating these collective excitations can be constructed explicitly. Massless relativistic wave equations with helicity S can be derived exactly for these operators from their Heisenberg equation of motion. For the S51 and S52 cases t...

Underlying the quantum theory of many-particle non-relativistic systems are the canonical quantum fluids superfluid phases of Bosons and Fermiliquid phases of Fermions. These two quantum phases of matter are extremely well understood, and are both accessible from models of weakly interacting particles. The only low energy excitation in a superfluid is the Goldstone mode of the broken particle n...

متن کاملGeneralized Laughlin wave functions including the effect of Coulomb interaction.
We present improved wave functions for the ground state, Laughlin quasihole and quasiparticle excitations of the fractional quantum Hall effect. These depend explicitly on the effective strength of Coulomb interaction and reproduce Laughlin’s original result in the limit of no Coulomb interaction.
